Hi there,
Happy Monday! Here's what we're watching in business and tech news this week:
-
Nike reports earnings on Tuesday. Gains from increased demand for new lines are likely to have been wiped out due to the coronavirus’ impact on supply chains. The retailer was one of the first to close stores amid the outbreak. Chipmaker Micron Technology and athletic apparel company Lululemon report Q4’19 earnings this week as well.
-
Thursday’s weekly jobless claims report could show the sharpest unemployment rise ever seen in the US. A Goldman Sachs analysis forecast an unprecedented 2.25M applications for unemployment benefits for last week, the largest week-to-week increase and a new record for weekly claims. Some predictions are forecasting that up to 5M jobs could be lost this year alongside a $1.5T drop in US economic output.
-
Expect discussion around the status of the 2020 Summer Olympics to heat up this week. According to news citing a senior member of the International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo event is likely to be postponed after mounting pressure from participating teams. This is just one of many events that have been postponed or canceled, including the annual art/music/tech conference South by Southwest and healthcare IT conference HIMSS. Clients can filter for SXSW and HIMSS exhibitors in our Conference Exhibitors Expert Collection.
- Look for news around a near-instant COVID-19 test as new kits arrive this week. Diagnostic test maker Biomerica began shipping samples of its 10-minute coronavirus test last week, as biotech cos ramp up in the race to cover gaps in diagnostics, treatment, and more.
