Over 1 ton of confetti made of paper and metallic material is dropped in Times Square to usher in the new year. But did you know that confetti used to be edible?

Before the 1890s, confetti was made of a variety of foods, from sugared almonds to hops to raisins and dates to sweetmeats.

Eventually, people realized something had to change — celebration-goers got sick of being pelted in the face with foodstuff. One bride in 19th-century Italy even lost her eye after being hit with a sugared almond.

Strips of paper became the material of choice for its safety and the way it floated.
