Tesla drives southeast. Over the past year, Tesla’s share price has fallen by almost 50%. Share price fluctuated throughout the first 3 quarters of 2022, then dropped to a 2-year low after Tesla CEO Elon Musk finalized his Twitter acquisition in October, and it has yet to return to its pre-Twitter self. With Tesla’s stock on the decline and battery tech startups rising up to challenge the automotive giant, 2023 could prove to be a bumpy year.

Breakthrough. Amid the quest for clean energy production, fusion energy news mentions have trended upward in recent years. At the start of 2022, meaningful net energy gain from a fusion reactor still had yet to be achieved, and news mentions of the topic dipped. But as we predicted, the tech advanced as the year continued. On Tuesday, the US Department of Energy announced that a net energy gain had been achieved for the first time in history, bringing fusion energy news mentions to a record high. NFTs, WTF? Non-fungible token (NFT) sales (among the marketplaces listed above) peaked at $7.1B this past January. Since then, the digital certificates of ownership have experienced a significant decline in demand. Last month, the combined sales of the top 5 marketplaces dropped to the lowest level since July 2021 — when OpenSea was the only open marketplace among them. Funding to NFT, gaming, and metaverse startups has also taken a plunge — falling to its lowest level since Q2’21 last quarter.

Hey Google, what’s Wordle? The most-searched term globally in 2022? Wordle — the addictive online word game that monopolized the hearts and souls of many around the world. In addition to the passing of Queen Elizabeth, Betty White, and Bob Saget, election results and shortages — of diesel, tampons, and baby formula — had people in the US turning to Google for more information.
