17 years: Microsoft issued a fix for a bug which had been in its code for 17 years. The vulnerability, which the company says is not known to have been exploited, could reportedly have allowed attackers to take over a victim’s entire IT infrastructure — making it possible to steal sensitive information and manipulate network traffic like emails.
3x: Researchers found that 2 earthquakes that occurred in California last year have made the San Andreas Fault 3x more likely to rupture, according to a paper published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. The new modeling puts the chance of a big earthquake being caused by the fault line, which many fear could threaten LA, at 1% per year — i.e. that's one every century.
9.7B people: The world population could peak at 9.7B people in 2064, with 183 countries projected to have a declining population by the end of the century, according to a study published in the Lancet.
