Coursera for beard whitening

Hi there,

Apparently there’s some solid money to be made in holiday cheer.

Mall Santas can bring in as much as $25K per season, but the elite Santas who book cast and crew parties in LA can make hundreds of dollars an hour.

There’s even an online school for it. The Santa Claus Conservatory offers video courses (not yet available on Coursera) like:

  • “Being a Mall Santa: Soup to Nuts”

  • “9 Do’s & Don’ts for Santa & Mrs. Claus”

  • “Beard Whitening & Care”

Mo’ money, mo’ problems.

 Internet, but make it fashion

Fast fashion has had a tough year. H&M, for example, posted flat sales growth during H1, and has $4B+ worth of unsold clothes piling up.

Meanwhile, online brands are thriving.

For your records

Amazon is launching a new service called Amazon Comprehend Medical, which can extract important data from patient records using machine learning.

This could help healthcare providers and researchers manage clinical trials and make decisions about treatments.

We examine what else Amazon is up to in healthcare here.

Cryptopia

This year, a mysterious company called Blockchains, LLC bought a huge piece of land in the Nevada desert for $170M in cash.

Its owner Jeffrey Berns, a lawyer and crypto millionaire, wants to use the land to build a blockchain-based community, complete with a university and an esports arena.

The idea is that members of the community would be in charge of their own data, which would drive the digital economy.

Berns says he knows the plans far exceed blockchain’s actual capabilities — for now. But here’s what it might look like in the future:

The question for you is: where is the limit? What can't blockchain solve?

I’m reminded of Fred Wilson talking about how corporations are jonesing for blockchain at The Future of Fintech.

Watch it. The normally calm and cool Wilson gets animated and drops this gem about corporates jumping on the blockchain: “Oh F$!?, the dumb money showed up.”

The 2019 Future of Fintech will be June 12-13 in NYC at Jazz at Lincoln Center. We’re capping it at 1100 again and it always sells out. Sign up.
