DC Mayor Vincent Gray to Address National Policy Summit

DC Mayor Vincent Gray will address the National Aging in Place Policy Summit taking place October 16, 2013 in Washington, DC. Mayor Gray will brief attendees on DC's participation in the Global Age-Friendly Cities Project. The project was established by the World Health Organization (WHO), and presently 33 cities in over 22 countries  participate in the project. Participating cities follow a template "age-friendly" checklist provided by WHO on topics including outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services.

Chapter Updates

NAIPC® is proud to announce the formation of our newest chapter, the Central Coast of California Chapter. The Chapter held their first meeting on September 26, 2013. Chapter leaders Galen Call and Teresa Sullivan began forming their Chapter after attending the First Annual NAIPC® Meeting in June and worked diligently throughout the summer to recruit their charter members. Congratulations and welcome to all of the Central Coast of California members!

The Sacramento Chapter recently participated in the Assistive Technology Expo, and they will participate in the upcoming Auburn Senior Health Fair October 9, 2013. Chapter Chair Steven Weaver was asked to speak at the Auburn Home Show, and Sacramento Chapter members will attend this event to support their Chair and promote NAIPC.

Dire Need for Caregivers Confirmed by Recent AARP Report

In August, AARP Public Policy Institute released a report that further confirms the growing need for caregivers. The report predicts that by 2030, when the baby boomer generation moves into late old age, the ratio of available caregivers to seniors aged 80+ will be reduced by nearly half and will continue to decrease through 2050. The report confirms what many of us already know: we need a plan. We need a way forward to ensure that the needs of the growing aging population are met.

Health and caregiving will be one of the main topics discussed at the National Aging in Place Policy Summit taking place October 16, 2013 in Washington, DC. The Summit will be just the beginning of this imperative discussion, the start of an effort to solve the challenging problems facing aging Americans.
