Black Saturday Anniversary

House going up in flames

Last year on February 7th Australia saw the most devastating fires in its history. What is now referred to as 'Black Saturday' saw temperatures in the high 40s and gale force winds over 120km/h ignite 400 fires and kill 173 people. It earned Victoria the inglorious title of host to the 8th most deadly bushfire in recorded history.

Since then, the 33 Recovery Committees have been leading the massive reconstruction effort of 293 public buildings. But rebuilding could still take years.

WHAT TO DO
Firefighters and Government agencies are urging residents to take more responsibility for the safety of their homes. The
NSW Rural Fire Service make several recommendations to keep your house properly prepared for fires, including:
  • Clearing roof valleys and gutters of vegetation and debris regularly
  • Replace damaged or missing roof tiles
  • Trim branches so they don't over-hang your home
  • Remove rubbish wood piles and vegetation from the vicinity
  • Mow your grass regularly
While we all hope nothing like that is every repeated, it makes sense to properly maintain the home - if not for it's appearance, for safety.

Gutter Cleaning Tip
The main culprit for full gutters is trees dropping leaves and sticks. Try to keep them trimmed back from the gutter. Most councils allow you to prune 10% of a tree every 12 months without permission.
