Letter From a Board Member

Dear fellow TGG members,

Technical projects are a cornerstone of The Green Grid and produce the results and deliverables on which our organization positions itself as a trusted adviser and key opinion leader for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry.

We prioritize high-quality activities because they provide solutions to the industry’s most pressing resource efficiency challenges. Our project work reflects on The Green Grid as a whole and helps us advance our global mission to drive effective, sustainable and accountable resource efficiency across the entire ICT ecosystem.

The Program Committee and Program Development Director manage the wide range of activity requests (ARs) that commence new projects. The Program Committee aligns these ARs with the strategic direction of the Board of Directors by:
  • Ensuring that new and ongoing ARs are within the scope of The Green Grid’s mission
  • Identifying areas of inadequate coverage and spurring work groups to create ARs
  • Providing necessary support and tools to enable AR leads to focus on content and deliverables
The Program Committee provides a basis for the AR leads to conduct and conclude their work, allowing them to focus on the subject matter. Specific support functions include:
  • Providing guidance and coaching throughout the entire AR process
  • Conducting regular reviews with AR leads on project status and development
  • Implementing simple processes that focus on efficiency and quality
  • Dealing with regional differences
I invite you to join our efforts. As a committee member, you can help guide the strategic direction of the projects. We are currently looking to increase our committee base to include more companies from across membership levels.

On a final note, I encourage our many members to get involved in initiating activity requests. It is an opportunity to contribute and take on a leadership position as an AR Lead. You have our support. Get involved now!

Sincerely,
Lance Rütimann

ACTIVITY UPDATE

WUE Moves to the Fore

The Green Grid developed the Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) metric in 2011 to help data center operators obtain a clearer picture of how much water their facilities are consuming on a kWh-of-IT basis. Since that time, high-profile droughts and other factors have made water usage by data centers an increasingly scrutinized topic. Despite broad awareness of WUE within the ICT industry, operators remain slow to embrace it. To address this challenge, The Green Grid will be focusing upcoming work group activity on refining the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) metric to directly account for the energy content of water.

Data Center Airflow Management Calculators
White Paper – For Members Only

Because substantial variations exist in tools for evaluating airflow management potential, The Green Grid’s newest white paper assesses major, publicly available software and calculators with respect to their applicability in estimating energy savings for utility incentives and defines the requirements for a calculator that will meet the needs of utilities and the data center industry.
