Dear Friend of Macaulay,
On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Macaulay Honors College, we unequivocally condemn the vile racism and white supremacy expressed through hate-filled images, words, and utterances designed to ruin the second annual Diversity Through Hair event.
The Diversity Through Hair event was an immediate success last year because it created such a positive forum to explore discrimination faced by many in relation to their hair. At the end, people left feeling empowered by the glorious beauty of their hair. The virtual event on Thursday was designed to create the same positive, celebratory result. Instead, a hate-filled Zoombombing forced the event to end before it had even begun.
To prevent future attacks, we are working to ensure that members of our community will be trained in Zoom management techniques. In the meantime, Zoom has provided these instructions on how to block or eliminate outside attackers.
The attack on the Diversity Through Hair event was an attack on our whole community. We stand in solidarity with the event organizers, the Macaulay Diversity Initiative, and pledge to do all we can to ensure that the rescheduled event will be the beautiful celebration of diversity it was designed to be.
